An Affirmation of
our Conviction
From
The Presbytery of San Joaquin
(Approved September 20, 2001)
In contrition and confession we, the
Presbytery of San Joaquin, come before the Lord God Almighty, humbly admitting
our sins of prideful contempt, selective truthfulness, and reactive
power-seeking. However, aware that any such statement may fall under criticism
for being narrow and judgmental, we nonetheless offer our belief that the
following affirmations are essential in the light of the issues before the
Presbyterian Church (USA) at this time.
- We
affirm our continuing enthusiastic support for all the confessions of the Book
of Confessions as standards that “serve to strengthen personal
commitment and the life and witness of the community of believers”(BOO,
G-2.0500b).
- We
celebrate the 213th General Assembly statement that, “[w]e
confess the unique authority of Jesus Christ as Lord. Every other authority
is finally subject to Christ.” Furthermore, we also affirm that Jesus
Christ is the one and only Savior of the world.
- We
anchor ourselves to Holy Scripture as the authoritative Word of God to which
all cultures are subject.
- We
declare that God’s holiness manifests itself in us as joyful obedience and
abundant freedom.
- We
affirm that it is God’s good design that we live in either fidelity within
the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, or chastity in
singleness.
We offer this witness to the glory of
God and the strengthening of the church in these turbulent times, praying: “Come
Sovereign God, breathe your life upon us. Heal us, renew us, and send us in the
power of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
